Notable Celebrity Baby Names
I’m always coming across websites or blog posts about “Weird Celebrity Baby Names” or “Wacky Celebrity Baby Names” or some similarly dumb title. Inevitably, the piece starts off by mentioning Frank Zappa and Moon Unit, or Bob Geldof and Peaches Honeyblossom, and oh, yes, don’t forget, Gwyneth and Apple, ho-ho-ho.
Enough already. Frank Zappa is no longer news. In fact, he’s no longer with us. Moon Unit turns forty in September, 2007, and I’m sure she’s heard all she ever wants to hear about her unusual name.
It’s not about being crazy or wacky (I know, Audio Science, Moxie Crimefighter, etc) — it’s about what the celebrity parents are doing. In this case, what they’re doing is naming a child, their child. And this being the celebrity-crazed, gossip-hungry world it is, we want to know every detail, every tiny little thing that celebrities do. We pore over it and we analyze it. And the ‘it,’ in this particular case, is baby names.
What are they calling their babies today? Why? What does it mean? Will the mainstream follow? Who came up with the most unique name?
So, while I don’t ignore the rich history of celebrity baby names, I spend most of my blog posts dealing with the newest babies and names — or what’s happening today. What are the trends? What’s in and what’s out? What’s cool, what’s not?
This short list of Notable Celebrity Baby Names is just a sampling of the names in our database — if you want to see more names, visit Baby Names Garden, where our database resides. And please — if you have a celebrity baby name you think we missed, let us know (the form is at the database on Baby Names Garden). We love to find new names and add them.

Bryce maximus?
Does any one else think of gludious maximus when they hear that?
Why does everyone like LeBrone James so much. He’s fat and his name is LeBrone!
whats with all the celebrity twins? doesnt it seem more than simply the odds of having them?
I am reminded of my name (Tyler Holly- I tacked on Holly in high school when I was tired of people laughing when I told them I had the same name as my boyfriend), my sons (Harrison Amadeus and Oliver Night), and my daughters (Braxton Laughter and Tinder Echo), and the unborn baby currently residing in my stomach (Sawywer Deveron for a boy or Kinsey Olivia for a girl). To add humor to this post (if your not laughing already) my husbands name is Joe Philips. Doesn’t get more common than that…
jennifer lopez and her husband named the twins Emme and Max- isn’t that the kids from the kids show on PBS Dragon Tales? I am pregnant now with my 6th boy and have absolutely NO IDEA what to name him!!! HELP!!!
there is nothing wrong with having odd names my kids got different spelling ive got kloe lyberti-nirvana jaymi
Charity, I have some ideas for your upcoming baby boy! I know that you wrote this a while ago but still, I wanna help you! The name ideas are:
Jason, Kyle, Joshua, Xavior-Tom, Jake, Lyle, Devin, Jonathan, Joey, Crash, Johnny, Leo, Jamie, James, Fiyero, Alexander, and Alec.
Okay, finally out of ideas for you, Charity! Bye!
I am all for wierd and wacky names, but my pet hate? Spelling normal names differently. Sorry Vikki but your kids are forever going to be saying ‘no it’s ja Y mi’, just ask my friend Alys (thats Alice to all the normal people out there)
you people are screwing over your kids. i know you want to be unique and all that jazz but there’s such a thing as too unique!
The ridiculous misspellings of common names is just silly. It doesn’t make your little Jakkubb any more unique or special than the kid who can spell Jacob. My son’s name is Nash, a bit unusual but it was his grandfathers middle name. I did not feel the need to spell it with extraneous frivolous letters. If I had named him Jacob I would have spelled it the common way so that no one would question his intelligence because of my childish desire to make him special and unique.
i was trying to look for something else on the internet but then i found this. and i decided to leave a message. My name is very common and i am in high school. it annoys me how parents name there kids and don’t think about what it will do to them. I have a friend called joachena(joe-a-kee-nah) and people would tease her and teachers would pronounce it wrong. So think about what your kids will go through in the future and how much they will be teased with a name like ‘buttercup rose’ or something
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog.
Cheers! Sandra. R.
I think the naming of a child is an intensely personal choice, however the parents must bear in mind some of the comments already echoed by other bloggers. Firstly so called celebrities generally have a different agenda than those of us residing sub hello, and that is self publicity. Many of these people are driven and ego centric so therefore a babynaming is an opportunity for self agrandisement. Also the child itself is not going to live the life that your average Joe or Jill Soap would encounter, they will often be cocooned from the sort of environment where a different name would represent a social impediment. It could also depend on the name itself and the socioethnic group of the child Tiaamii would be strange name in rural shropshire for a WASP child, but perfectly acceptable in a racially mixed inner suburb location. What any parent should consider is whether the name itself would strengthen the child or act as a millstone.
When I look at the list of names provided by the site I do not see many that I would consider inappropriate, certainly there are some odd ccombinations but in the majority the child will only be known by the first name or a shortened pet name e.g. Wilder could be Wil. For most people the middle names are generally honorific, a chance for parents to show appreciation to a family member or personal icon.
The only areas of naming children that I find strange are when a male name is used for a female examples would be Hayden (a welsh/english boys name meaning fiery) and Finley (an irish boys name meaning little warrior)I find this trend disturbing and await with trepidation the arrival of a small girl celebrity child called Barry or Kevin. The other area of concern being the individual spellings Kyle-Cial Jamie-Jaymee etc I think this could have originated where people encountered other cultures who may used the same name but have spelt it in there own language, Celtic names are a great example of this Owen/Owain/Eoian being one. There is however no excuse for some of the ridiculous spellings that you see offered as forenames for children from some quarters. What can look like an endearing quirk from the point of view of the parent, can seem to be a screamingly obvious indicator of poor education and low intelligence to everyone else. I entreat everyone who names a child to think hard….how will the chosen name stand up in the playground.
I think like it has been said before people need to stop and think before naming their child because yes celebrities children may not experience the same things as us lowly commoners but I bet not all of them actually appreciate being called the names they have like Apple, Pilot, Ever, Suri, Shiloh, Maddox, Pax, Zahara etc I could go on forever with that list. Anyway ok I get it you want to name your child something different but what happened to the day where you would name your child after family members?? But one of the worst things I know is having to spell your name over and over again for teachers because trust me after awhile it gets annoying and you simply give up, thats what I did with my name which is Deirdre a traditional Irish name but since I got tried of having to spell it all the time I have shorten it to Dei (said like Dee). OK I think I have ranted enough.
