US Online is reporting that Spiderman star Tobey Maguire, and jewelry designer fiancee Jennifer Meyer (daughter of Universal Studios president Ron Meyer) welcomed a baby girl into the world on November 9.
Since they apparently had little else to offer in the way of background, the ever-creative US Online decided to ask their readers to — you guessed it! — help name that baby!
I’m not going to sink to such low, predictable levels of gossip journalism. I did that a few weeks ago for Sofia Coppola. I’m going to sink even lower, and comment on the names that US Online readers suggested. Let’s have some fun!
- ‘Texas Confessa’ suggested ‘Cne,’ pronounced ‘Sinay.’ Is there something in the water down there in Texas?
- ‘Anonymous’ offered up ‘Jayna,’ ‘Sharlana,’ or ‘Tena.’ What is it with names these days? It’s like a contest to see who can come up with the most mangled phonetic combinations of once ordinary names.
- ‘Kobey,’ (from the name formerly known as Coby) suggested ‘Kimberly.’ That’s going to happen. Not.
- ‘Katie J’ suggested ‘Tobalina.’ Then she spoiled her creative moment by appending ‘after her Dad.’ Thanks Katie J, never would have gotten that.
- ‘Anonymous’ suggested ‘Shayla’ or ‘Shania.’ That’s original. Only 10,000 babies last week were christened with some combination of the letters ‘Sh,’ ending in ‘a’ or ‘ia.’
- Next entry, ‘Sara Foster’ came up with ‘Rashida.’ See what I mean?
- Off-topic a bit (but then so are at least half the comments in the US Online story) but I love this one: “Here, here to the not choosing a name that puts the child in harms way on the playground.” (All spelling and grammatical errors original).
- ‘Patty’ suggested ‘Savanah, Samantha, Lily, Oliva, Nathalia.’ I kid you not.
- ‘Krista Fondnazio’ took the opportunity to say online what she has obviously been dying to share: “I think that Jennifer Meyer is a total slut. Tobey didn’t want this in a magazine. I can’t believe this happened. He was supposed to keep his life private. It wasn’t in the paper or in People Magazine. All the female fans are going to be so pissed off. I especially am. Just makes me want to Kick Princess Jennifer’s ass. What does he see in that bitch? I have seen her in public when she came her for a poker tournament. Why the hell would Princess Jennifer have a baby with someone who doesn’t want that announced publicly?”
Hmm. I think Maguire and Meyer may want to ask their security detail to keep an eye out for a deranged and angry female fan, probably foaming at the mouth, lurking at the gate to their Hollywood mansion.
- How about this comment from ‘Laura Tucker’ (is she using her real name?): “ummmmmmmm idk what they should name therebaby girl….hopefully not a name everyone has like samantha…o god thats everyones name or how about LAURA…yeayhhhhhh cuz thats my name!!!!!!!hahahah LOL:] yupppppppppdeeeeedooooooooo!!!!LOL:].”
Not much left of the English language in that comment.
- Here’s a comment that is so dripping in jealousy, I can’t resist posting it. ‘Anonymous’ wrote: “Ew. She’s majorly fat in that pic and not great looking either. Rich enough to buy mansions but not rich enough to buy a box of condoms?”
Ew.
- ‘Mary’ suggests ‘Jenby,’ helpfully adding “a combo of Mom and Dad.”
- ‘Anonymous’ chimed in with this vitriolic gem: “Is she hiding a basketball there? I find her.. rather non cute. In fact she has a masculine butch look – perhaps Toby will evolve in time and stop banging masculine looking women and just jumps on a gay wagon with other nerdy boiz.”
I think I’ve had enough for one day of the comments from US Online’s motley bunch of readers. A lot of anger simmering just beneath the surface there!
For a breath of fresh air, or the journalistic equivalent of cleansing the palate after a wine-tasting, how are some of the gossip sites heralding the Maguire/Meyer’s baby?
Celebrity Buzz delivered the news as if they were writing up the local police blotter. Boring.
I’m Not Obsessed repeated tha announcement from People and added the scintillating tag: ‘Details to follow.’ I can’t wait.
BabyRazzi looked no further than People for their 25 words or so. Wouldn’t have expected any more from them.
Defamer.com didn’t write it up yet — c’mon guys, can’t wait for your take on this!
This story doesn’t seem to really be stirring up the Gossiparazzi today — I guess I’m gonna have to wait for Monday…
