Slow Year So Far For Celebrity Baby Names

Have they stopped having babies in Hollywood? So far, 2010 is proving to be one of the slowest years for new celebrity babies since we started keeping track more than four years ago.

Still, there is some hope that 2010 won’t be a total bust. Celebrities expecting babies include Kevin Costner (any day now); Céline Dion, who’s expecting twins in November; John Travolta and Kelly Preston; Alicia Keys; Jessica Capshaw; Matt Damon (again!);Amy Poehler; Jeff Gordon (boy coming in August); Danica McKellar (Wonder Years star, due in fall) and Chris Daughtry (twins in November).

Meanwhile, Sheryl Crow adopted a second son in early May. Levi James joins 3 year-old Wyatt at Crow’s home, according to her website.

Costner Continues Cowboy Theme With New Baby Name

kevin costner photoKevin Costner, 54, grew up in the vicinity of Orange County, California, but he continues to reinvent himself as an icon of the American West. He, and wife Christine Baumgartner, 34, chose another western-themed name for their second son, Hayes Logan, born February 12. Their first son, Cayden Wyatt, was born in 2007.

Costner, who released a country album with his band Modern West last year, told People that Hayes is a cowboy  character in a Western movie that is in the pipeline, and that “it’s a great Western name”.

I don’t know. Costner seems to be doing this Western theme the way some people approach interior decorating. Pick a western theme and go with it. I’m sure Dances With Wolves must have been a pivotal movie for Costner, but I hope we won’t see his boys dressed in little cowboy outfits any time soon.

Top Baby Names Of 2006 Revealed

Every year, the Friday preceding Mother’s Day is an important day for anyone interested in the most popular baby names in the United States. That’s the day when the U.S. Social Security Administration posts to its website the data for the previous calendar year showing the most popular baby names in the country.

It’s like the Academy Awards for the baby names crowd, only not as much fun.

This year, there was hardly any change in the top ten names for both boys and girls. In fact, the top girl’s name in the United States, for the eleventh boring year in a row, is Emily. (Nothing wrong with Emily, but number one for over a decade? Whatever happened to creative baby naming?). And for boys, Jacob was the top baby name for the eighth year in a row. Yawn.

Here is a useful roundup of the top baby names of 2006.

With the exception of Reese Witherspoon’s “Ava,” which made an impressive showing at number 5, and possibly Gwen Stefani’s “Kingston,” debuting in the top 1000 at number 941, I don’t see much crossover from the world of celebrity baby names to the real world. That shouldn’t surprise anyone, since celebrity baby names are on the leading edge of our culture, except in cases where the name has fallen clear over the edge. (Moxie Crimefighter comes to mind, as does Kal-El, Pilot Inspektor, and Apple).

Considering it was 2006, one might have expected the names Shiloh or Suri to crack the top 1000, but there was no sign of either.

If anything, some celebrity baby names seem to reflect the real world, rather than vice versa. Kevin Costner’s new baby boy, Cayden, is a good example. Cayden is an increasingly popular name in the “aden” category, including all kinds of rhyming variants such as Jayden, Braden, Aiden, Kayden, etc. Costner, in fact, is quite the trendy baby namer — his son’s middle name Wyatt, also chosen by Sheryl Crow, is also an increasingly popular name.

The name Sebastian, picked for her son by actress Kim Fields, is also growing more popular, as is Marcia Cross’s “Savannah” and T.V .Psychic John Edwards’s “Olivia.”

But perhaps the biggest name to move between Hollywood and the rest of us is the name Addison, which happens to be the name of Kate Walsh’s character on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. In the 2006 rankings, the name Addison was the fastest-rising name in the top 100, rocketing from number 106 to number 27.

Is it life imitating art, or art imitating life? Or is it all just one big blur?

Baby Boy For Kevin Costner And Christine Baumgartner

kevin costner photoKevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner, who married in September, 2004, welcomed a baby boy, their first child together, on May 6. The new arrival, the first for Baumgartner and the fifth for Costner, is named Cayden Wyatt, according to US Magazine.

Cayden is one of the many creative ways that people have come up with to spell the name Caden, since everyone wants to be different and have a unique baby name. So now there are thousands Caydens, and Cadins, etc. Whatever. Anyway, it’s a Gaelic name, and as far as the etymologists can tell, it probably means “battle.”

The name Wyatt is from Old English roots, and means “brave in war,” or “brave warrior.” I’m not sure if the happy couple were trying to give their son a warlike start in life, or if they just happened to like the names.

Anyway, after movies like Waterworld and Dances with Wolves, maybe “brave battle warrior” is the perfect name.
