Poll Results For Julia Roberts’ Baby Name

Our weeklong poll about your favorite Julia Roberts’ baby name is over, and the winner, by a whisker, is Hazel. She came in just ahead of newborn Henry, garnering 59 votes to 52 for Henry. I’m a little surprised — I thought the classic “Henry” was going to sweep that poll.

What’s not surprising is that Roberts’ third baby name - her son’s, Phinnaeus - didn’t appeal to many of you.. Only 25 poll participants - a mere 18% - voted for Phinny.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing many Phinnaeus’s in the future, either on a celebrity baby names list or in the broad population.

Julia Roberts Plays It Safe With New Baby Name

julia roberts photoJulia Roberts gave birth to her third child, a boy, on June 18 in Los Angeles. His name is Henry Daniel, and he weighed 8 1/2 pounds at birth.

Roberts, and husband Daniel Moder, are playing it safe with the baby name. After taking a lot of jibes about the names of their twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, born in 2004, the couple have chosen to steer clear of oddball names like Phinnaeus.

It doesn’t get any more traditional than Henry, with his father’s name, Daniel, thrown in for good measure.

What Will Julia Roberts Name Her Baby?

Celebrity Pregnancy Watch

Julia Roberts is expected to give birth to her third child sometime around late June. What on earth will she name her son or daughter?

It’s going to be tough to come up with a name that holds its own with the twins, born in November, 2004, to Roberts, and her cinematographer husband Danny Moder. The twins are named Hazel and Phinnaeus.

The name Hazel is okay, if a little dated. The name Phinnaeus is a different story. It is truly old-fashioned, if not archaic. For more details on the history of the name, see our earlier post.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what Roberts and Moder can come up with.

Celebrity Baby Name of the Day

“Phinnaeus”

Sooner or later, when you’re reporting on celebrity baby names, you have to come to “Phinnaeus.” That’s the name that Julia Roberts and husband Daniel Moder gave to their son, born on November 28, 2004. The question is why?

julia roberts photorazziPhinnaeus is an alternate spelling of the biblical name “Phinehas,” and authorities are mixed on the original meaning. The biblical Phinehas was an overzealous sort, who killed a fellow Israelite for marrying a woman from the wrong tribe.  Ouch.

Then again, perhaps Roberts, who is believed to have chosen the name herself, was naming the little boy after Phineas T. Barnum. Maybe she hopes little Phinnaeus Walter will grow up to be a great producer.
