Gwen Stefani Welcomes Baby, Names Him Zuma Nesta Rock

It will undoubtedly be the top celebrity baby name of the year, assuming it turns out to be true.

A New Zealand website is reporting tonight that Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale welcomed their second son in the last 24 hours, and he is named Zuma Nesta Rock.

Rumors are already spreading on the internet as to the source of this unusual name. Zuma may refer to Zuma Beach in California; Nesta was reggae legend Bob Marley’s middle name; and “rock” — well, you get the picture. This is Gwen Stefani’s baby, after all.

Too early yet to see if this sticks — it wouldn’t be the first time that the early rumor on a celebrity baby name was way off the mark. But this name is just so out there — hard to believe somebody cculd have made it up if it wasn’t true!

Gwen Stefani Baby Name A Hit Among Parents

Sometimes, the names that celebrities give their children become a big hit in the general population. The latest statistics from the Social Security Administration show that Gwen Stefani’s choice of Kingston for her son has started a trend.

Kingston was barely a blip in the Top 1000 most popular baby names back when 2006 statistics came out. But this year, the stats for 2007 show Kingston jumping from # 942 to # 355.

Some other celebrity baby names that seem to have sparked a trend with new parents:

Ava, as in Reese Witherspoon’s daughter, is the 4th most popular girl’s name in the U.S.

Shiloh, as in Jolie-Pitt, jumped onto the top 1000 list in 2007, at # 804. The boy’s name Maddox is moving up quickly also.

Jayden, the name of Britney Spears’s son, is a name that has been rising for a number of years. But in 2007, the year following Jayden James Federline’s birth, it hit the after-burners, moving from # 49 to # 18.

But just because it’s high profile doesn’t mean a celebrity baby name will get picked up by the masses. Suri Cruise, for example, was born before Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, but so far at least, new parents aren’t biting.

Baby Names Floating Around Gwen Stefani’s House

gwen stefani photoUPDATE: August 20, 2008. News just hitting the internet that Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s son has been born — and his name is Zuma Nesta Rock!

There are celebrity babies, and then there are superstar celebrity babies, the kind whose birth gets a front page story on CNN.com.

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s second child falls into the superstar category, and recently the couple talked with Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM radio show about baby names, among other things.

Rossdale told Seacrest that “there are some names floating around the house,” according to People. He added that it’s going to be tough for the new kid’s name to measure up to big brother Kingston, because “Kingston set a pretty intense standard.”

Maybe so, but let’s get things in perspective. It’s not like Stefani and Rossdale are in the same league as Brooke Burke and David Charvet, who basically froze for a few weeks after their son was born, because they couldn’t come up with a name to match sisters Heaven Rain, Neriah, and Sierra Sky. Now that was pressure!

Kingston is a cute name, but it’s no Heaven Rain. I’m thinking Stefani and Rossdale ought to be able to mint a brand new name within a couple of days of the anticipated summer birth. We’ll be waiting!

Top Baby Names Of 2006 Revealed

Every year, the Friday preceding Mother’s Day is an important day for anyone interested in the most popular baby names in the United States. That’s the day when the U.S. Social Security Administration posts to its website the data for the previous calendar year showing the most popular baby names in the country.

It’s like the Academy Awards for the baby names crowd, only not as much fun.

This year, there was hardly any change in the top ten names for both boys and girls. In fact, the top girl’s name in the United States, for the eleventh boring year in a row, is Emily. (Nothing wrong with Emily, but number one for over a decade? Whatever happened to creative baby naming?). And for boys, Jacob was the top baby name for the eighth year in a row. Yawn.

Here is a useful roundup of the top baby names of 2006.

With the exception of Reese Witherspoon’s “Ava,” which made an impressive showing at number 5, and possibly Gwen Stefani’s “Kingston,” debuting in the top 1000 at number 941, I don’t see much crossover from the world of celebrity baby names to the real world. That shouldn’t surprise anyone, since celebrity baby names are on the leading edge of our culture, except in cases where the name has fallen clear over the edge. (Moxie Crimefighter comes to mind, as does Kal-El, Pilot Inspektor, and Apple).

Considering it was 2006, one might have expected the names Shiloh or Suri to crack the top 1000, but there was no sign of either.

If anything, some celebrity baby names seem to reflect the real world, rather than vice versa. Kevin Costner’s new baby boy, Cayden, is a good example. Cayden is an increasingly popular name in the “aden” category, including all kinds of rhyming variants such as Jayden, Braden, Aiden, Kayden, etc. Costner, in fact, is quite the trendy baby namer — his son’s middle name Wyatt, also chosen by Sheryl Crow, is also an increasingly popular name.

The name Sebastian, picked for her son by actress Kim Fields, is also growing more popular, as is Marcia Cross’s “Savannah” and T.V .Psychic John Edwards’s “Olivia.”

But perhaps the biggest name to move between Hollywood and the rest of us is the name Addison, which happens to be the name of Kate Walsh’s character on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. In the 2006 rankings, the name Addison was the fastest-rising name in the top 100, rocketing from number 106 to number 27.

Is it life imitating art, or art imitating life? Or is it all just one big blur?

Celebrity Baby Names Trivia

Baby names authors Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Satran are popping up all over at the moment, promoting their new book The Baby Names Bible: The Ultimate Guide By America’s Baby Naming Experts (winner of the self-aggrandizing book title award, 2007).

Here’s an interview they did with the Chicago Sun-Times about celebrity baby names. It actually contains some interesting trivia about how particular baby names were chosen, including David and Victoria Beckham’s Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz; the now-split Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s Ava; Nicholas Cage’s now boring Kal-El story; Tom Cruise and Katie Holme’s Suri, especially the pointy-nosed bit, which looks like they got from my posts; and the ever-fascinating Penn Jillette-Moxie Crimefighter saga.

One thing I didn’t know — Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale bought a hat with the name Kingston on it several years ago, while they were recording in Jamaica. They were planning that far ahead. That’s what I call being on top of your celebrity baby name planning.

Are Celebrity Babies An Addiction?

Once in a while, I like to break out of my journalistic routine on the Celebrity Baby Names Blog and peer at the outside world. Imagine my shock, this morning, during my semi-annual review of non-celebrity news, when I came across an authoritative-looking blog post claiming that “Celebrity Babies Are An Addiction.”gwen stefani photorazzi

The author pokes fun at how people just have to know the intimate details of famous celebs’ day-to-day lives with their babies, such as where Gwyneth Paltrow buys her onesies (anyone know, by the way?); what brand of formula Suri Cruise chugs (Katie Holmes doesn’t breastfeed?), and what make of bassinette Britney Spears chose (I don’t know, but I’m sure she bought it at Petit Tresor).

Yet, even as she brands our national interest in celebrity babies as an addiction, the writer confesses that she too could not resist the lurid pages of the October, 2006 Vanity Fair, when Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and little Suri graced its pages.

I’ve got news for her. Following celebrity babies is not an addiction. It’s an obsession! Is there a difference? Sure there is! An obsession is much more fun! Just ask Calvin Klein.

Suri Cruise Edges Out Shiloh Nouvel In Yahoo!’s Top Searches 2006

Yahoo! has just released its list of the Top Searches of 2006, and Suri Cruise, the daughter of Tom Crusie and Katie Holmes, suri vanity fairborn April 18, 2006, edged out Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, daughter of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, born May 27, as the most popular celebrity baby name that was searched for on Yahoo! during the past year.

Sean Preston Federline, eldest son of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline came in at number 3, while his newborn little brother, Jayden James (formerly, and falsely, known as Sutton Pierce) came in right behind at number 4. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s son Kingston James rounded out the top five.

In the bottom half of the table, Madonna’s adopted African baby, David Banda, was the sixth most popular search term. Gwyneth Paltrow’s and Chris Martin’s baby Moses was number seven, and Brooke Shield’s son Grier was number eight.

Coming in at a disappointing number nine was Donald and Melania Trump’s young royal, Barron William Trump, while Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter, Dannielynn Hope, joined the high flying celebrity babies at number ten.

Donald ain’t gonna be happy with that. I can see him buying his own search engine and paying some people to click on it endlessly in order to win in 2007. I’m not sure, but MSN’s Windows Live Search should be up for sale pretty soon.

It’s A Wee McGregor For Gwen Stefani And Gavin Rossdale

Singer Gwen Stefani and husband Gavin Rossdale welcomed a new member to their clan on May 26, as Gwen gave birth to a bonnie boy in Los Angeles. His name? Kingston James McGregor. Both Gwen and Gavin apparently have Scottish blood in their heritage, so it’s no surprise they came up with James McGregor for the wee bairn. Fine Scottish names they are too. But Kingston? Are we talking Kingston Trio here? A nod perhaps to either Gwen’s or Gavin’s early musical influence? Nothing so heartwarming. Gwen, apparently, loves Jamaica, so Kingston it is. They reportedly plan on referring to their new son as ‘King’.
