Celebrity Baby Names Roundup

After a drought of new celebrity babies, it has been a busy week for new famous little offspring!

NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon and his wife Ingrid Vandebosch, seen here with daughter Ella Sofia,  added to their family with the arrival of a son, Leo Benjamin, on August 9. As he did with the arrival of his daughter Ella Sofia several years ago, Gordon combined the online birth announcement with his upcoming racing schedule.

Meanwhile, comedian Amy Poehler and husband Will Arnett went for a biblical name, Abel James, for their son, born August 6. Abel joins big brother Archie at home, which means they’ve got a lot of “A” names in their household: Amy, Archie, and Abel.

On August 8, actress Annie Wersching, star of 24, gave birth to her first child, a boy, in Los Angeles. The baby’s name is Freddie. Wersching, 33,  and husband Stephen Full, were married in September, 2009.

Country singer Luke Bryan, 34, and wife Caroline, 30, welcomed a second son yesterday, and, interestingly, gave him what is traditionally viewed as a girl’s name. They called him Tatum Christopher. Maybe the name Tatum will become more of a unisex baby name now that such a high profile boy bears the name.

Finally, among the pregnancies announced recently, are British singer Lily Allen; singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette, and Penny Lancaster, wife of 65 year-old Rod Stewart.

Slow Year So Far For Celebrity Baby Names

Have they stopped having babies in Hollywood? So far, 2010 is proving to be one of the slowest years for new celebrity babies since we started keeping track more than four years ago.

Still, there is some hope that 2010 won’t be a total bust. Celebrities expecting babies include Kevin Costner (any day now); Céline Dion, who’s expecting twins in November; John Travolta and Kelly Preston; Alicia Keys; Jessica Capshaw; Matt Damon (again!);Amy Poehler; Jeff Gordon (boy coming in August); Danica McKellar (Wonder Years star, due in fall) and Chris Daughtry (twins in November).

Meanwhile, Sheryl Crow adopted a second son in early May. Levi James joins 3 year-old Wyatt at Crow’s home, according to her website.

April Has Been A Quiet Month For Celebrity Baby Names

Some months, celebrities seem to be giving birth like bunny rabbits, and other months, well, it just seems kinda quiet. April has been one of those months. Only three new celebrity baby names to report from the last few weeks.
Amanda Peet went into labor right before her scheduled Letterman appearance last week, and gave birth to daughter Molly June shortly thereafter.

This morning, rocker Mark McGrath, of the band Sugar Ray, and his fiance Carin Kingsland, welcomed twins: Lydon Edward and Hartley Grace. Interesting first names for both the twins. Lydon was the real surname of Sex Pistols icon Johnny Rotten. And Hartley is usually seen as a surname also. No doubt the backstory will surface one of these days.

Claudia Schiffer photoAnd for those of you waiting with bated breath for the A-list celebrity babies (and their correspondingly unusual baby names) there are a few on the horizon.

Expectant celebs include Amy Adams, Tiffani Thiessen, Claudia Schiffer (on left), Luke Bryan, Amy Poehler (again, already!), Matt Damon, and, last, but far from least, the couple we can always count on for the coolest, most original celebrity baby names — Jools and Jamie Oliver! (Jamie: everyone in my house loves your show — keep up the great work trying to teach children good nutrition, and to stop eating so much crap).
