In this celebrity-besotted world, it takes a lot to stand out these days, but Nicole Richie and Joel Madden have managed to pull it off beautifully as they named their new son Sparrow James Midnight, born early on September 9.

Naturally, Madden tweeted about the birth of his son within a few hours of his arrival: “1st day of his life & my son is already a trending topic on twitter”.

Although the blogs and celeb sites are all a-Twitter about the origin of the name Sparrow James Midnight, I have yet to see an authoritative comment on the choice of name from either parent. The gossip chroniclers at People wheeled out one of the usual suspects, Linda Rosenkrantz, to give a “professional” comment on the origin of the name. She had no inside information on where it came from.

Richie and Madden are no strangers to cool celebrity baby names. They named their daughter Harlow Winter Kate two years ago.

Showbiz couple Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel welcomed their much-anticipated first child on September 2, a boy. His name is Walker Nathaniel.The couple, who are both 38, met when they starred in the original Broadway production of Rent.

The name Walker has an interesting background. It is an old English name, and it refers to a person who actually cleaned raw, unrefined wool for a living. The rather unpleasant-sounding job involved walking on wet wool, to clean it. Hence the name Walker.

Actor Tom Cavanagh (Ed, Love Monkey) and his wife Maureen Grise welcomed their third child in August, and continued the family tradition of ultra-traditional baby names. New to the household is James Joseph. He joins big sibs Thomas Patrick, 2, and Alice Ann, 3 1/2.

Meanwhile, Bones star David Boreanaz and actress wife Jaime Bergman are taking the opposite tack, going out there on a limb with true-to-form celebrity style baby names. Their first daughter arrived August 31  and is named Bardot Vita. There’s a name you don’t see every day. And little Bardot joins big bro Jaden Rayne, 7, at home.

Women’s golf pro Annika Sorenstam announced on her blog the arrival of her first child, a girl, on September 1. The newborn’s name is Ava Madelyn. Apparently Sorenstam did the post within an hour of the birth. Reminds me of when singer Erykah Badu was twittering during labor earlier this year. Very peppy.

Royal names are in the news, as actress A. J. Langer, (My So-Called Life), who is married to Charles Courtenay, son of the current Earl of Devon, gave birth to the couple’s second child, a boy, on August 16. His name is Jack Haydon. Langer’s so-called life turned fairytale when she met her future royal husband in a bar in Vegas in 2004. Jack is now second in line to become Earl of Devon. No word on what royal goodies are available for big sister, Joscelyn Skye, 2.

Nicole Sullivan, star of Rita Rocks, and actor husband Jason Packham, welcomed their second child, a son, on August 31. They named him Beckett Edward. A very cool name, (Beckett) by the way, and one of the up-and-coming names touted by Freakonomics authors Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. Beckett is the second child for the couple. Big bro Dashel Pierce, 2, is waiting at home.
