Roger Federer Twins Get Old-Fashioned Baby Names

Roger Federer imageTennis champ Roger Federer, and his wife Mirka, welcomed their first children, twin girls, on Thursday evening in Switzerland, according to Federer’s website.

The new parents, seen here at the Madrid airport, came up with a creative pair of baby names, with a definite retro twist.

The baby girls are named Charlene Riva and Myla Rose.

Charlene hit its peak of popularity in the United States in 1949, and has been going downhill ever since. Now that the name has been chosen by the first couple of tennis, it may make a comeback. (But I wouldn’t hold my breath). The name Riva is Hebrew, a variant of Rivka, which is a diminutive form of the name Rebecca.

The name Myla is even more unusual. It’s sometimes thought to be a female variant of the name Myles, but I think that’s a bit of a stretch. I think it’s probably one of those names where if parents like the sound of it, they go for it. It’s a phonetic thing. Plus, I think if they knew it was the feminine version of Myles, they’d drop it fast.

The name Rose, meaning “rose,” is, as always, tacked on as a middle name. (Actually, it probably means “fame,” but that’s another story).  I’ve written about this phenomenon before. Why does nobody ever choose Rose for a first name?

Dear Roger and Mirka, we are so very happy for you! You have no idea at this time of your lives what complete joy these two precious little girls will bring to your lives. We wish you as much love as our combined seven children have given us. Two boys and five girls. Age range from 65 to 45. So, you see, we know from what we speak of.
Much love to you, all four.
    Maria, Marion and me, Helen

Perhaps the girls were named after relatives or grandparents. In any event, I wish them all the best, and am delighted for them and especially since Mirka and the babies are all doing well. Mazel tov, Roger & Mirka.
