Rapper M.I.A. caused quite a stir back in mid-February, when bloggers and gossipmongers ran with the story that she had named her newborn son Ickitt. A miffed M.I.A. struck back on her MySpace page.

Having been burned with this kind of false rumor myself, most memorably when Britney Spears fooled everyone into thinking she had chosen Sutton Pierce for the baby who was named Jayden James, I held off on the M.I.A. contretemps until an authoritative source came through with the confirmed name of M.I.A.’s baby.

Confirmation is finally here, courtesy of People. The baby’s name is not Ickitt. It is Ikhyd. There is no word yet on what Ikhyd means, so I’m not going to compare it to Ickitt, except to say I’m sure that Ickitt doesn’t mean anything.

So, for the record, M.I.A.’s baby boy, born February 11 in Los Angeles, is named Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman, after father Benjamin Bronfman. M.I.A.’s real name is Mathangi Arulpragasam.

For someone who has led as ‘newsworthy’ a life as Charlie Sheen, he has given us precious little to talk about in regards to the names of the twins welcomed by Sheen, 43, and wife Brooke Mueller, 31, on March 14.

Max and Bob. There you go. What can you say about names like that? They’re short? They’re both 3 letters? Max is so yesterday?

I don’t know. You’d have thought the legendary bad boy of Hollywood could come up with something a little more creative. Then again, he does have his hands full, what with a nasty custody fight with Denise Richards over daughters Sam and Lola Rose, and his 9/11 theories.

Imagine a schoolyard fight between Anne Heche’s son and Nick Cage’s son — Atlas versus Kal-El!

Is classical superhero the new direction for celebrity baby names? Actress Heche gave birth to her second son last weekend, and to keep company with his big brother, Homer, Heche and boyfriend/actor James Tupper named the newborn Atlas.

Homer is Heche’s seven-year-old son from her recently-dissolved marriage to Coley Laffoon.

I think the two kids are a shoo-for a Greek fraternity.

It’s been two weeks since we last posted, so here’s a roundup of new celebrity baby names since Kevin Costner went all Western:

Actress Constance Marie, 43, who starred as Angie Lopez on ABC’s George Lopez, is a new mom. Her daughter Luna was born February 5 in Santa Monica.

Spice Girl Melanie Chisolm, 35, welcomed a baby girl on February 22. The baby is named Scarlet, and is the first child for Chisolm, and her boyfriend Thomas Starr.

Supermodel Niki Taylor, 33, and her Nascar-racing husband, Burney Lamar, became the parents of a baby girl named Ciel on March 4.

So while it’s been pretty quiet as far as new arrivals in the past few weeks, there is an impressive backlog of celebrity babies building up. Celebrities who are expecting a bundle include Mira Sorvino; Charlie Sheen (twins); Josh Turner; Nicole Richie; Tommy Hilfiger; Julie Bowen, and Nicole Sulivan.
