Celebrities Playing It Safe With Baby Names
Will 2008 be the year of the boring celebrity baby name? It makes me yearn for the days of Pilot Inspektor and Zolten!
Lauren Sanchez, host of the inaugural season of Fox T.V.’s So You Think You Can Dance, welcomed a daughter on January 15, and named her Eleanor Patricia. Whoa, is this the Fifties again?
Former star of the show Survivor, Jonny Fairplay, and his fiancee, Michelle Deighton (a former Top Model contestant) named their new daughter Piper Addison — a bit better, but Piper is very 90s.
And finally, Entourage’s Constance Zimmer, whose daughter was born January 5, came up with Colette Zoe. I’m not impressed.
But with all the stars who are expecting offspring (or allegedly so), there’s lots of time to get the year back on track. Let’s hope it happens. After all, if celebrities started to give their kids the same kind of names as the rest of us, “celebrity baby names” would hardly be worth blogging about. Perish the thought!

Actually, these days it is much more unusual to be an “Eleanor” than a *throw in random masculine surname suddenly turned into an acceptable girls name*. The difference is than while ‘Piper Addison’ screams “born in the 2000’s” (since neither name has been used for girls for more than 15 years, and they are both non gender specific surnames with unpleasent meanings), Eleanor won’t - it is an historically rich, feminine and versatile name, not to mention classy and sophisticated.
I love the concept you’ve used for your blog, but I honestly think you should learn more about onomastics and yeah - name originality - than to just “go with the flow” of what people find cool or not!
Keep up the good work
I love Eleanor and Piper, the former especially. I’ve recently developed a taste in classic names, and Eleanor is certainly one of those. I dislike the middle names though. Addison is so tryndee.
I love the name Piper. I love it so much that I gave the name to my daughter. I saw the movie “Carrie” when I was 10 years old and saw Piper Laurie in the credits and thought to myself that Piper is such a unique and cute name and decided then and there, when I have a child and if it’s a girl, I will name her that, and I did. I just love the name and I don’t think it’s “very 90’s” at all. Everyone says it’s an odd name but pretty, and up until last year I started hearing of others picking up on the name.
