The Ten Most Notable Celebrity Baby Names of 2007 — Our Second Annual Review

It’s that time again — time for The Celebrity Baby Names Blog’s annual review of the best, or at least the most notable, celebrity baby names of the year.

Last year’s review of the most notable celebrity baby names of 2006 featured a particularly strong field, including Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, Suri Cruise, and Jayden James Spears. How did 2007 measure up?

Without superstar names like Cruise or Jolie-Pitt, 2007 still managed to be a year of unusual, fascinating, and occasionally wacky celebrity baby names. It was also a year when traditional names seemed to be popular among the stars, perhaps a result of just too many weird celebrity baby names in recent years.

As it was last year, choosing the ten most notable names of the year was a difficult task. When we select the most notable, we look for much more than just weird or offbeat names. We look for stories behind the names, and for that elusive quality that makes a celebrity baby name not just interesting, but perhaps even a trendsetter. We think we’ve picked ten celebrity baby names that will remain memorable for years to come.

# 1. Heaven Rain.

In the end, the daughter of actress Brooke Burke and actor David Charvet seemed a natural for the number one spot. Burke especially seems drawn to creative names — she has two daughters from a previous marriage, named Neriah and Sierra. And with a fourth baby on the way, we wanted to give her all the encouragement we can in the baby-naming department.

# 2. William Huckleberry.

One of the most talked-about babies of the year is the son born to country music star Brad Paisley, and his wife, actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley. In a poll on this site, half the respondents loved the name Huckleberry, and half seemed to hate it. Love it or hate it, it’s a memorable name for a very famous celebrity baby.

# 3. Angel Iris.

Sometimes, controversy and publicity trump just about everything. So it was with this pick — Angel Iris, daughter of Spice Girl Melanie Brown, and — in a late admission of paternity — comedian Eddie Murphy. The couple are famously not together, but Angel Iris won’t be fading from the celebrity baby headlines anytime soon.

# 4. Princess Tiaamii.

It’s names like this one that keep people curious about celebrity baby names. British glamour model Jordan (real name Katie Price) and her pop singer husband Peter Andre created quite a stir back in January when they named their daughter Princess Tiaamii. But this is a couple that understands stardom, and they know how to be over the top. It surely won’t be long before little Princess Tiaamii is introduced to Donald Trump’s faux-royal baby — Barron William.

# 5. Jagger Song.

Does Mick Jagger know about this baby? He’s the son of musician Brett Scallions, former lead vocalist of the band Fuel, and Abby Gennet, MTV veejay and lead singer for the New York band Slunt. Little Jagger was born in September, 2007, and yes, he is named after Sir Mick.

# 6. Eden and Savannah.

The birth of actress Marcia Cross’s twins in February was one of the true celebrity births of the year, surrounded by a huge amount of media hype, in part due to Cross’s fame for her role on Desperate Housewives, and in part due to her age — almost 45. The twins were the result of in-vitro fertilization, Cross revealed. She also reported that she and husband Tom Mahoney each independently came up with the name Savannah. She came up with Eden while getting a massage.

# 7. Alabama Gypsy Rose.

It just exudes country, poetry, and America. The daughter of Drea De Matteo, who played Adriana on The Sopranos, and musician Shooter Jennings (son of the late country star Waylon Jennings) was one of the more original celebrity baby names of 2007.

# 8. Beckett Mancuso.

Actress Diane Farr, star of the CBS show Numb3rs, picked one of the trendiest, up-and-coming names for her son, born in March. She has revealed that the name Beckett was chosen in honor of playwright Samuel Beckett. It is also the name of Conan O’Brien’s son — definitely a celebrity baby name on the hot track.

# 9. Ever Gabo.

Actress and model Milla Jovovich and fiance Paul Anderson named their newborn daughter Ever Gabo in November, and left everyone scratching their heads and wondering where the names came from. Jovovich later said that the name Ever is a Scottish boy’s name (we can’t verify that claim, nor do we know why they chose a boy’s name for a girl) and Gabo is a made up name combining the first parts of her parents’ names, Galina and Bogie. Actually, it was more fun not knowing how they came up with the name.

# 10. Ptolemy John.

How could we not put a name like Ptolemy on the list? Actress Gretchen Mol, and director husband Tod Williams, chose the name for their son, born in September. It’s not every day you hear the name Ptolemy. Most of us don’t even know how to pronounce it! But no matter — it’s really different, and when it comes to celebrity baby names, that counts for a lot.

t.A.T.u Star Yulia Volkova Keeps Baby Name Secret

I hate it when celebrity parents keep the celebrity baby name a secret!tatu photo

As readers of this blog are aware, Holly Hunter is the poster-mom for this kind of thing, having kept the names of her twins a secret for nearly two years.

Now, t.A.T.u. singer Yulia Volkova, shown here on the left with her singing partner Katina, is joining the club, announcing the birth on her website, but keeping the baby’s name a secret.

The baby’s father is also shrouded in secrecy — he is identified only as Parviz. This is the second child for Volkova, who has a 3 year-old daughter named Vika.

Ten Most Notable Celebrity Baby Names of 2007 - A Sneak Preview

It’s nearly time again folks. Our second annual “Ten Most Notable Celebrity Baby Names” list will be out in early January, bringing you the most outstanding celebrity baby names of 2007.

Last year’s crop was a particularly impressive field, with the likes of Shiloh Nouvel, Suri, and Jayden James leading the pack.

But those celebrity baby names are yesterday’s news — it’s time to make way for the best of 2007!

Which names will make the cut? Let’s cast our mind back over the past 12 months, and see what the celebs named their offspring this year.

In January, Johnny Damon’s daughter was named Devon Rose, keeping up that longstanding tradition of choosing Rose only for a middle name.

Also in January, and surely a contender for the # 1 celebrity baby name of 2007, Brooke Burke and David Charvet named their daugher Heaven Rain.

Actress Amy Locane named her daughter Paige Cricket before January was done, and February opened with the Patrick Dempsey duo of Darby Galen and Sullivan Patrick. As winter drew to a close, Marcia Cross delivered Eden and Savannah, and Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley bestowed the name William Huckleberry on their son.

Spring brought us Liam Aaron from — who else — Tori Spelling. It also brought Alimayu Moa-T for Wesley Snipes, and Grace and Ava for Mia Hamm. Then on Eddie Murphy’s birthday, April 4, Melanie Brown of the Spice Girls gave him a little present named Angel Iris.

Kevin Costner welcomed his new son Cayden Wyatt in early May, and Jaime Pressly gave birth to Dezi James Calvo a week later.

Victoria Smurfit named her daughter Ridley Belle at the end of the month, and Ashleigh Banfield quickly snagged the name Ridley also — for her son.

Mary Cheney went the Biblical route, and named her new son Samuel David, proving that even celebrities can choose traditional baby names once in a while. But model Katie Price got us back on track by calling her daughter Princess Tiaamii.

As summer wore on, Jenna Elfman came up with Story for her son, while Sarah Gilbert named her daughter Sawyer. In August, another Rose showed up — this time in the form of Lael Rose, the daughter of Grant Hill and Tamia Hill.

Fall brought a spate of “J” names, with Josselyn Sydney for Samantha Harris; Jake for Tina Yothers; Jesse, for Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, and and June Catherine for Balthazar Getty.

And just in the last month or so, Milla Jovovich named her daughter Ever Gabo, Jill Hennessy went with Gianni, and Drea de Matteo and Shooter Jennings set the bar high by naming their daughter Alabama Gypsy Rose (again with the Rose — somebody please use Rose as a first name, just once).

It has been another banner year for celebrity baby names, and hopefully, we’re not done yet. Our 2nd annual Ten Most Notable Celebrity Baby Names comes out in early January, and it’s going to be a tough task, once again, choosing just ten names from an outstanding field. But we’ll give it our very best, as always.

Got a favorite celebrity baby name from 2007? Feel free to comment — if we get enough support for some names, we’ll take your comments into consideration!

Baby Number Five For Chris O’Donnell

Grey’s Anatomy star Chris O’Donnell, 37, is a father for the fifth time, according to People.

O’Donnell, and wife Caroline Fentress, a former teacher, welcomed their daughter Maeve Frances on December 10 in Los Angeles. Maeve, a Gaelic name meaning “intoxicating,” is not a name you see very often. Still, when you’re looking for your fifth baby name, I suppose you’ll be glad to come up with just about anything.

Maeve joins sister Lily and three brothers in the O’Donnell household. (Or should I say “clan”).

Milla Jovovich Explains Celebrity Baby Name

It’s not often that celebs give us the rationale behind their baby name choicesMilla Jovovich baby photo — heck, Holly Hunter still hasn’t even revealed the names of her twins, yet, and they must be like, sixteen or something now.

So it was a pleasant surprise when actress and model Milla Jovovich explained on her blog recently why she and fiance Paul Anderson named their baby girl Ever Gabo. If you recall, we posed that very question just after the baby was born last month.

Well here’s the answer — along with a cute picture of the baby which yes, I grabbed from Jovovich’s blog and downloaded. (Something I almost never do. I actually pay for photos I use, unlike a lot of celebrity sites I could mention).

The name Ever, according to Jovovich, is a Scottish boy’s name. (Why they chose it for their daughter, only they know, but who cares — no-one’s ever heard of it anyway). And the name Gabo, which I astutely determined to be in honor of the dead Russian sculptor, Naum Gabo, was actually a totally made-up name. I love it! It’s a combination name formed from Jovovich’s parents: Galina and Bogie.

Keeping up the family tradition.

Now there’s a celebrity baby name a kid can be proud of! Way to go, guys. That’s a shoo-in for our second annual Ten Most Notable Celebrity Baby Names of the Year, coming in early January.

In case you’re wondering, Jennings is the son of the late country star Waylon Jennings.
