When you don’t have any new celebrity babies or celebrity baby names to write about, you write about celebrity pregnancies! It’s a world of rumor, speculation, disinformation, and just plain gossip– what’s not to like?

Is Jennifer Lopez pregnant? Who knows? According to Hollyscoop.com, she has the pregnancy glow, even though she told US Weekly that she’s not expecting. The About.com: Celebrity Gossip maven is sitting on the fence, but reading between the lines, I think the About expert is leaning to “yes.” And a couple of days ago, A Socialite’s Life declared positively that Lopez is pregnant, because “her nose is gaining weight.” (Trust me, ya gotta read it).

Looks like it could be the real thing this time. Or not.

Is Eva Mendes pregnant? Who knows? Latina Viva thinks she may be. In Case You Didn’t Know claims you can clearly see a pregnancy bump on her photos, and mentions she was spotted leaving a pre-natal yoga clinic. Jonathan Jaxon, the first Hollywood blogger to confirm the Halle Berry pregnancy rumor, promises to investigate. Hurry up, J.J.!

Is Melissa Joan Hart pregnant? Yes she is! iVillage’s Daily Blabber goes with a no-nonsense headline, Melissa Joan Hart is Pregnant. Can’t argue with that. The star of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and husband Mark Wilkerson, (guitarist for Course of Nature), already have a one year-old son, Mason. The Daily Blabber hopes this will be a girl, and they’ll name her Tabitha.

What to take away from all of these rumors and half truths? When it’s a celebrity’s first baby, chances are she’ll keep quiet, at least for a while. Take Christina Aguilera. She’s going to be giving birth, and still claiming she’s not pregnant. But if it’s her second or more — no big deal. Let the good times roll! 

And while we’re talking about secrets — what’s up with Holly Hunter? Her twins are well past a year old, and still she won’t release their names. How about it J.J? Can you find the answer to that one?

Samantha Harris, co-host of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and correspondent for E! News, made a career of motherhood even before she became a mother.

She gushed about her upcoming baby to E! Online. She blogged about her pregnancy in The Bump Report for Fitness Magazine. ABC turned the speculation about her Dancing with the Stars replacement into a tease for tonight’s show. All in all, the Samantha Harris baby show has been a carefully choreographed P.R. event.

It has not gone unnoticed.

Fame Crawler called her “the greatest pregnant poser of all time.”

So what now? Samantha Harris, 33, gave birth to a baby girl in Los Angeles on September 23. The newborn is the first child for Harris and her husband, Michael Hess. And after all the hoopla, they named her Josselyn Sydney, which is a bit of a letdown for a celebrity baby name.

There are some names where you can play around with the original spelling and it looks cool. Jocelyn is not one of them. ‘Josselyn’ just looks like you can’t spell. But at least it’s not as bad as how actress A. J. Langer and the Earl of Devon mangled Jocelyn earlier this year. They came up with ’Joscelyn.’ That looks like they’d been drinking when they filled out the birth registration.

For once, sanity has prevailed. Back in April, Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher told an interviewer that if his and Sara MacDonald’s new baby was a boy (or as he put it, a “geezer,”), they might name him Chutney. Or maybe Gilly, or Gizmo.

I was so shocked that I conducted a reader’s poll on the issue, where you overwhelmingly agreed that all three names sucked big time.

It seems that sanity (or more likely, Sara MacDonald) has prevailed. Their baby boy was born on September 22 in London, and is named Donovan Rory. The couple told news media that they named him Donovan in honor of the mellow Sixties singer, and Rory because it’s a grand Irish name.

Donovan is the first child for MacDonald, 35. Gallagher has a daughter, Anais, 7, from his marriage to Meg Matthews.

According to No Rock and Roll Fun, Gallagher sent out the following text to his friends:

“He shall go by the name of Donovan Rory MacDonald Gallagher and he will be a legend. Give thanks and praise”.

Following reports that she was “gutted” when pianist and model Myleene Klass named her baby Ava in August, British singer Charlotte Church, 21, and rugby player boyfriend Gavin Henson, 25, have named their newly-arrived daughter Ruby Megan.

The baby was born at the couple’s home in England, around September 21.

Ruby is a great choice. Classic, making a comeback, not too popular. Ava, meanwhile, according to one website, is poised to become the number one name in the United States. Which means it will be the new Britney in a few years.

Ruby, unlike Ava, was very popular in the 1930s and 1940s — Hollywood’s Golden Age. Despite the association with Ava Gardner, the name Ava was never very popular, until it shot up the charts in the last decade.

So in the end, Church may thank Klass for stealing her chosen name out from under her.

Valentina is a good strong name. It comes from Latin roots, meaning “strong” or “vigorous”. And in 1963, the Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman into space. 

And now we have another famous Valentina, about a day old, who is already more famous than the first woman into space. 

Valentina Paloma Pinault, the daughter of Salma Hayek, 41,  and fiance Henri-Francois Pinault, 45, was born either late Thursday or early Friday, according to People. 

No surprise that the baby is a girl. Back in June, discussing the possible gender of Salma Hayek’s baby, and based on the preponderance of pink in the layette she was purchasing at Bel-Bambini, I shrewdly guessed that a girl was on the way.

The baby is the first for Hayek. Pinault has two children from a previous marriage, which ended in divorce in 2004. He is the CEO of a family-based business that owns Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, among other properties. 

The rumor mill says wedding bells may be ringing in December.

Award-winning actress Mary-Louise Parker, 43, (Fried Green Tomatoes; West Wing; Weeds) has adopted a baby girl from Africa, according to reports in People and other media.

Sadly, like Holly Hunter and her twins, Parker has witheld the name of her baby, causing widespread speculation about what she might call her daughter.

Parker already has a son, William Atticus, with her ex, actor Billy Crudup. William Atticus is one of those interesting combination names, where the first name is very traditional and the middle name sort of off the wall. And it often seems to involve the name William, like Brad Paisley and his son, William Huckleberry.

No telling where Parker is going with this new name, of course, but I’m guessing we’ll see a traditional first name and a way-out middle name.

Husband and wife stars Natasha Richardson and Liam Neeson, seen here at the New York premiere of Dreamgirls last December, named their second son Daniel Jack.

It’s hard to believe he hasn’t already had his fill of whiskey jokes.

It’s been a quiet week for new celebrity babies being born, which always leads to a quiet week for new celebrity baby names. Sure, I could do entire posts about who just got pregnant:

• Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie on Full House, is pregnant, and she is so desperate to revive her acting career that she gave her sonogram pictures to gossip site TMZ in an attempt to drum up some media attention (it worked — who is her publicist?)
• Kelly Klein, 50, ex-wife of Calvin, has hired a surrogate to bear a child using her eggs and donor sperm, according to the New York Post. And according to experts, the chance they’re her own eggs is less than 1%.
• Rapper Foxy Brown, who last month told the New York Post she was pregnant, really isn’t, according to her manager.

And so it goes. Pregnancy here, pregnancy there. But where are the celebrity babies this week?

UPDATE: November 9, 2007. It’s gonna be a girl! Ryan confirms for People that she’s expecting a baby girl — and she’s looking for a French baby name. Ryan told the gossip site: “”We’re looking for a French name. It’s hard! We want a French name that sounds good to an American ear, and vice versa. It’s not easy, but we definitely want to give her a French name.”

Actress Jeri Ryan, who plays Jessica Devlin in the hit CBS legal drama Sharks, is pregnant. Ryan, 39, married French chef Christophe Eme in June in France’s Loire Valley. The baby is due in March.

Ryan has a 12 year-old son, Alex, from a previous relationship with Jack Ryan, a one-time contender for a U.S. Senate seat from Illinois, which was eventually won by Barack Obama.

It’s not like we didn’t know she was pregnant, but, as TMZ reports, Paris Hilton shot her mouth off at the MTV Video Awards in Las Vegas last night, gushing: “I want everyone to say congratulations to the most beautiful pregnant woman in the world, Christina Aguilera. You’re gorgeous”!

Apparently Aguilera, and husband Jordan Bratman, initially looked shocked — shocked — but quickly recovered and continued partying.

I think the real story here is that Paris Hilton is hearing a little ticking.
