Jenna Elfman Baby — The Real Story
Dharma & Greg star Jenna Elfman, and husband Bodhi Elfman, welcomed their first child together, a boy, on July 23 in Los Angeles. The newborn weighed in at 7lb 2oz, according to People.
But the real story here is the baby’s name, which is Story. Well, Story Elias to be exact, but the first name is obviously the one that people are going to ask questions about. Such as: what does it mean? Where did it come from?
I looked into some of my baby name resources, and found no trace of the name ‘Story.’ Even my favorite, Baby Names Garden, didn’t have it, although they did have a new list of Preppy Baby Names that I loved.
I continued digging until I found one citation for the name, in a recently-published book called The Baby Name Bible by Pamela Redmond Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz. Here is the full entry for Story:
‘A word name. A new name with a lot of charm, especially appropriate for the child of writers.’
No indication of where the authors found this name, or where it sprang from. Maybe it sprang from their heads, and the Elfmans read their book; one of those last-minute things, as in “oh sh*t,’ we still haven’t picked a name, let’s call him Story.”
Who knows. But for sheer strangeness, Story is certainly on my shortlist for the Ten Most Notable Celebrity Baby Names of 2007, to be published in early January.
My alternate theory, since Jenna Elfman is a Scientology buddy of Tom Cruise, is that they simply wanted something to rhyme with Suri.

She might have gotten the name Story from a movie- Lady in the Water. I named my daughter Story after the lead character in that movie! Story Elias is not the only Story out there.
I’m so glad you posted this because I was thinking of sending you an email the other day to see if you had dug anything up!
Our 3 year old son is named Story. He was named after 5-time NASA shuttle commander Story Musgrave.
Its origin is Norse. A good viking name meaning “Large” as in exploits and stature.
The liteary “story” comes from the Greek “historia” and has nothing to do with the name.
the name is actually more common than people realize… for both boys and girls.. i’m 36 and my mom named me story ann..it was her childhood friends name….
My name is ALSO Story. I wasn’t a fan of Lady in the Water’s usage of the name because I don’t want to become a “Story M.” or a “Story G;” The name is good because it’s creative and unique. Don’t name your kids after a character in a movie–what kind of story is that?
As an add-on to my last comment, I’d like to say that Story Musgrave is pretty chill.
i named my baby girl story after the move lady in the water i just heard it in name form and fell in love!
