New Heir To Japanese Throne Named Hisahito

Japan’s newest prince, born to Princess Kiko and Prince Akishino on September 6, will be named Hisahito, according to reports from CNN.com. The name means “virtuous, calm, and everlasting,” said the Japanese Imperial Household Agency.

I have to admit, I was not aware of the fascinating naming ceremony that goes along with naming a new royal in the Japanese imperial system. His father bestowed the new name on the little guy during a short ceremony. The name is also painted onto rice paper, and it is placed in a little wooden box along with Hisahito’s personal crest, and kept next to his baby pillow. Very cute! The suffix “Hito”, which is a Chinese character, means “virtuous person,” and is traditionally used in the male Japanese imperial line.

Now that makes a change from wondering about the name of Britney’s new baby, doesn’t it?
