Celebrity Baby Births Hit A Slowdown
It’s unofficial, but as far as I can see from my roundup of my ususal sources, celebrity baby births have hit something of a slump, at least in the U.S., just in time for the summer doldrums. When you’re writing a blog whose lifeblood is the steady supply of new, and creatively-named little humans, this can be problematic. No babies, no blog. So I’m prospecting a little further afield in this post, to report the following news about British celebrities and their baby naming activities.
Sir Matthew Pinsent (come on, you know who he is) and his wife Demetra are the proud new parents of twins, Jonah and Lucas. (Jonah?). Well, there is a bit of a nautical link — Sir Matthew is a British rowing star and four-time Olympic Gold medalist.
Also from Britain, where apparently celebrities have not been informed about the slowdown in births, Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer and supposed heir apparent to Prime Minister Tony Blair, and wife Sarah, welcomed their new son James. I like it. James Brown. Son of the next British P.M.
Finally, British author Helen Fielding (Bridget Jones’s Diary) and her husband Kevin Curran (writer for the T.V. show The Simpsons) brought a new daughter into the world. Unfortunately for me, they have not yet announced her name. Since her big brother is named Dashiell, we can expect something with a literary flavor.
One footnote to this review of British celebrity babies – I can’t help but notice that the British appear to keep having babies long after their American counterparts are hitting the plastic surgeons. Young Sir Matthew is a sprightly 35. Helen Fielding is 48. And to his credit, and showing that he deserves without question to be the next British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown celebrated his 55th birthday before his new son was born. Go Gordon.
