Don Johnson & Wife Kelley Keeping New Baby Name Under Wraps

UPDATE: Don Johnson’s new baby boy is named Deacon - a very formal Christian name that definitely bucks the trend toward unusual celebrity baby names!

A baby boy was born on Saturday, April 29, 2006 to Miami Vice star Don Johnson and his wife Kelley. The name of their newest son has not yet been announced. The couple, who married in 1998, already have two children together: daughter Atherton Grace, and son Jasper Breckenridge. No indication yet of the new baby’s name, but with sibs like Atherton and Jasper, I don’t think they’ll be looking at baby names like oh… Apple, (Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter), or Suri, (you know who), or Pilot Inspektor (Jason Lee’s son).

Actor Billy Boyd And Partner Ali McKinnon Opt For Traditional Baby Name

Scottish screen star Billy Boyd, probably best known for his role as Pippin in Lord of the Rings, and his partner Ali McKinnon, welcomed a baby boy on April 26, 2006. Perhaps taking their cue from the ridicule and satire surrounding the baby name chosen by Tom & Katie, “Suri” Cruise, Boyd and McKinnon opted for a very traditional name for their new baby — Jack William. It just goes to show that simply because you are a movie star, it doesn’t mean that you have to name your baby something weird. Jack William is a pretty nice combination.

Tom and Katie pick “Suri” — Toda tribe shocked

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise announced the arrival of their daughter Suri on April 18, 2006. “Suri?” Where did Tom and Katie get Suri from? I knew things were going to get messy when I read that Suri means “get the heck out of here” in Hebrew (or words to that effect). A Cruise family spokesperson countered that Suri “has its origins in Hebrew, meaning “princess,” or in Persian, meaning “red rose”.

Well, yes, the Hebrew name Sarah certainly means “princess.” But Suri isn’t Sarah.

Tom and Katie may wish they’d done a bit more research on Suri before they announced it to the world. According to 75,000 + Baby Names for the 21st Century, by Lori Cooper, (Lothian Books, 2001), “Suri” is Todas for “pointy-nosed.” Ouch! Who are these Todas anyway, and what’s their problem with pointy noses? Over to Wikipedia, where we find that the Toda people are a small, pastoral tribe of southern India who reside in the Nilgiri Hills. The Toda number less than 1,000 and are an isolated people who speak Toda, a Dravidian language (Dravidian being a group of languages spoken in southern India, Sri Lanka, and parts adjacent). But no word about why the Todas are so hung up on the pointy nose issue.

I’m not saying that “pointy-nosed” is the only meaning for Suri. Or even the main one. There are many other appearances of the word Suri around the world, inlcuding being the name for a Pashtun tribe; a “rose” in Persian; an ethnic group in southwest Ethiopia; “sun” in Sanskrit; a district in West Bengal; a term for a type of alpaca wool, and even, supposedly, “pickpocket” in Japanese. But I can’t help feeling that the meaning little Suri is really going to be steamed about is “pointy-nosed”.

For Brooke Shields — Baby Grier is finally here

Tuesday, April 18, 2006 was a big day for Hollywood star babies — as Brooke Shields and Katie Holmes both gave birth to baby girls on the same day. Actress Brooke Shields, and producer Chris Henchy, are the proud parents of little Grier Hammond Henchy.brooke shields photorazzi

Grier? Apparently, a name of Scottish derivation, meaning “watchful” or “vigilant.” Hammond? It’s an English name, thought to mean “of the village” or “from the village.” Let’s put that together if we can, and see what Brooke and Chris were aiming for: “watchful of the village.”  Hmm. I guess it means something to Brooke and Chris, but I don’t quite see it. Still, Grier does have a lot of rhyming possibilities, which is always fun…

At least it doesn’t mean “away with you” in ancient Celtic, or something equally disastrous.
